Dense concentric rings of colour fill an open sketchbook spread like a churning sea. Sailing boats, fish, a spotted octopus and a pale many-eyed moon are worked into the waves in fine black ink and white gouache.

Row Your Boat

Paper

The idea for this one is a little mystical. I imagined a sailor just back from a long journey at sea, telling the people around them about everything they saw and every obstacle they conquered. All in all, it was a fun adventure.

To me, that's what life is. There's going to be a big squid monster you have to get past, and it's dangerous, but you come out the other side and it turns out it was an adventure.

A close view of one corner of the spread, lit from the side so the marker strokes catch the light. A dark octopus with pale dotted tentacles curls through banded waves of red, yellow, teal and violet.
